Eastedge, ND
Barnes County
Vacant as of 5/05

Eastedge, ND is in south-central North Dakota, between I94 and the South Dakota border. It is a true ghost town. Only two homes remain standing on the townsite.

Eastedge was founded in the year 1900, named after the old railroad construction camp. A post office followed two years later, and Eastedge had grown to 80 people by 1920.

Using maps we got from Mapquest, we were surprised to discover the suggested route to Eastedge was impassable. The road leading in from the East is now completely underwater.

In the photo of the abandoned house pictured top-right, what you're seeing is a genuine North Dakota sleet storm, on May 1st no less. It truly is a land of extremes in the upper midwest.

In addition to the abandoned homes, there was also an abandoned and run-down loading dock crumbling into the ground next to the tracks (bottom-left), and numerous foundations (bottom-center).

To explore Eastedge, a 4X4 vehicle is reccommended, or you can make the short hike down to the rail bed from the road. The townsite is full of open basements and tall grass, so use extreme caution.

The nearby town of Nome is a interesting point to check out too. Although there is still a sizable population, there are several interesting abandoned structures including what looks like a large school.

Site visitor Shawn Bjerke recently wrote us to say:

My Grandmother walked to school in the one room school house at Eastedge. I also remember her telling me that the last resident of Eastedge committed suicide in the late 60's or early 70's! Maybe its a true ghost town!
